According to TASS news agency, on the night of July 4, local time, a huge explosion occurred in the Caspian waters near Azerbaijan and caused a fire. The scene was captured by residents on the shore and quickly spread in the media and the Internet.

In the early morning of July 5, local time, Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company has dispatched ships urgently to carry experts from relevant departments of various countries to investigate the incident.


Regarding the cause of the explosion, the satellite agency said that some initial reports believed that the explosion might be related to a nearby oil rig. However, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) later denied this claim, and the company issued a statement stating that there were no accidents on its oil rig.


"The offshore platforms and industrial facilities under the direct control of Azerbaijan State Oil Company have no accidents, and the work is proceeding as usual. If there is more information, we will inform the public." Azerbaijan State Oil Company said on Twitter late on the 4th local time. ↓


According to the Ministry of Ecology of Azerbaijan, the accident is under investigation, and the initial cause is said to be a volcanic eruption.
